“The succulent plant sits in the windowsill of my bright, airy apartment and soaks up the sun. I rescued the poor thing from an abandoned stoop in my neighborhood. I spied it several mornings in a row while walking to work, seeing it droop further and further onto itself. Blocked from all sunlight, it could not thrive and would soon have been completely dead. Not being able to stand it any longer, I crept to its stoop by the cover of night and scooped it into my handbag, smuggling the poor thing back to my apartment. A few weeks of sunshine, with a little water here and there, and it was good as new. I thought my days of playing rescuer had come to a close, but then I noticed a hungry cat living in the alley behind my favorite coffee shop. My succulent may soon have a brother.”
