Question 21 - Reading: Level D Practice Test for the TABE Test

The word fatigued, as it is used in Passage 1, most nearly means ____.

Passage 1:

The debate over banning homework has been going on for a long time. While many people think homework has always been part of school, it is actually a fairly new idea. However, it may be time for that idea to go away. To help students learn more and enjoy school, we should stop giving homework in grades K-12.

There are many reasons to support banning homework. First, it causes students a lot of stress and worry. More than half of students in America say they feel overwhelmed because of their take-home assignments. They feel fatigued from late nights trying to finish their work. This pressure to get good grades can even lead some students to cheat.

Homework also creates unfairness in schools. When teachers assign homework, they assume every student has a quiet place to work and the tools they need to finish it. In reality, many students do not have a good place to study at home. Some students also have family chores or responsibilities that take up their time.

It is time to get rid of homework and let children focus on being kids.

Passage 2:

Some people want to get rid of homework to reduce stress for students. However, research shows that homework is a great tool for success. People who think we should stop giving homework may actually be setting students up to fail.

Practicing at home helps students remember what they learned in class. Most high school classes are less than an hour long, which is not enough time to cover everything. Homework gives students extra time to learn at their own speed. Instead of rushing to keep up with the teacher or other students, they can take the time they need to finish the work.

Homework also helps students build important life skills. To finish their assignments, students must learn how to manage their time, stay organized, and solve problems. These are the same skills people need in the real world. Studies show that high school students who do their homework are more likely to succeed in college. They are also better at balancing school and work responsibilities.

Even though some people don’t like it, many advocates believe homework is a valuable tool. It helps students take charge of their own learning for the rest of their lives.

Hint

Look for words like most nearly, (most, more) likely, most clearly, (most) closely, usually, typical(ly), often/most often, (most) common(ly), leading, particularly, and probably in questions. They indicate that you should look for the best answer, not necessarily the only possible one.
