Theme refers to the central topic of a text. Often universal in its application to humanity, a theme is an idea, lesson, or message expressed by the author. It is the “big idea” the author is trying to convey to the reader, and it can be directly or indirectly stated within a text. Themes create meaning and, while more commonly applied to fiction, can be identified in nonfiction pieces as well.
