to compare is to find similarities, while to contrast is to find differences
When comparing items or subjects, your purpose is to find all of the similarities and like-attributes between two (or more) things, such as color, descriptions, or purpose. When contrasting, your purpose is to find all possible differences and ways in which the items or subjects are dissimilar.
