\(x = \dfrac {-b \pm \sqrt {b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}\); \(a \neq 0\)
This formula is often used when the other methods of solving the quadratic become complicated. The variables come from the coefficients of the quadratic equation in standard form: \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\).
