preposition
Prepositions are relationship-determining words. They explain the relationship, usually spatial, between one thing and another (it is next to, above, below, behind, under, etc.). It is important to be able to identify prepositions and prepositional phrases (phrases that start with a preposition) because the subject of a sentence is never found in the prepositional phrase. So if you can find where that is, you know not to look for the subject there.
