Hold the cane on the unaffected (strong) side; advance the cane 6 to 10 inches, move the affected leg forward level with the cane, then step forward with the strong leg.

Using the memory aid COAL (Cane Opposite Affected Limb), holding the cane on the strong side widens the base of support and shifts body weight away from the injured leg. Advancing the cane and weak leg together maintains balance before stepping past with the strong leg.
