The Pythagorean theorem states that the sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. If the lengths of the legs are \(a\) and \(b,\) and the length of the hypotenuse is \(c,\) then the equation to find the length of the hypotenuse is: \({a^2} + {b^2} = {c^2}\)

Note: The Pythagorean theorem is one of the three formulas you’ll need to memorize before taking this test because it is not given on the formula sheet. The others are the quadratic equation and the distance formula.
