How to Outsmart the ACT Math Test

The ACT Math section has 60 questions and 60 minutes to complete them. If this seems like an impossible task, read on! There are several ways to maximize the use of that time and get more answers right, thus, a higher score on the test. Time management is important. Do the following things and you’ll have an edge:

Know the Instructions

One thing to do to save time is to become thoroughly familiar with the type of instructions this test uses. Do this by taking lots of practice tests. Then you won’t waste time on the day of the exam trying to read directions and understand them.

Monitor Your Time

Have your own wristwatch so it is easy to keep track of time. This way, you’ll be able to gauge the time you have to spend on questions.

Keep Moving

Obviously, your time is quite limited, so, if you can’t get anywhere on a question in 10 to 15 seconds, mark it, skip it, and return to it later. The goal is to complete the questions that are easy for you as soon as possible, leaving time for the harder ones. However, remember that the questions get harder as you go along, so do focus on getting as many of the first 20 to 30 as you can.

Use Timed and Untimed Practice Tests

When you take practice tests, be aware of how much you finish in 60 minutes, but give yourself enough time to do all of the questions to the best of your ability. Make a note for any question finished after 60 minutes and compare the score you got in 60 minutes with the score you got if you had all the time you needed. This helps you to understand if time management or content knowledge is more important for you.
