Explanation:

We can perform four different types of transformations on figures in a plane:

  • Dilation preserves the angles but changes the length of the sides by a constant multiplier, which may be a whole number or a fraction. This either enlarges or shrinks the figure.

  • Translation moves a figure from one place to another.

  • Rotation turns a figure about a fixed point.

  • Reflection flips a figure about a certain line.

Hence, a transformation that enlarges or shrinks a figure is known as dilation.
