Flashcard 12 - ELAR: Writing Flashcard Set for the TSIA2
Back
a group of words pretending to be a sentence, but missing a subject, a verb, or a complete thought
Explanation:
To be complete, a sentence must have a subject and a verb and must express a complete thought. If any one of those components is missing, the sentence is an incomplete sentence or sentence fragment. A period at the end of a group of words does not make a sentence a sentence.
Fragments:
* Went outside to play. (missing subject—who went outside to play?)
* Francesca and all her friends. (missing verb—what did they do?)
* When Francesca and all her friends went outside to play. (the word when makes it an incomplete thought—what happened when they went out to play?)
Complete Sentences:
* Francesca and all her friends went outside to play.
* When Francesca and all her friends went outside to play, they saw Mario.
