Paraphrasing means translating a text into your own words. Unlike a summary, which shortens and condenses the main ideas, paraphrasing requires rewording of main ideas and supporting details so that the paraphrase is roughly the same length as the original. Paraphrasing does require that you cite your source, even if you are not using an author’s exact words. Failure to cite the source results in plagiarism.
