Hyperbole
Hyperbole helps a writer make a point. When you say, “My grandpa is older than dirt,” you don’t really mean he’s billions of years old, but this comparison helps the reader understand that he must be pretty old. Hyperbole is not meant to be taken literally and the exaggeration can sometimes be so extreme that it creates humor.
