counterclaim or counterargument

In a persuasive text, authors will often acknowledge what the opposition is likely to argue in a counterclaim to the argument put forth by the author. By recognizing and addressing potential counterclaims, the author can rebut those arguments and explain why those perspectives are somehow inaccurate.
