The subject, or what it’s about, is the topic of a text. Theme refers to the universal message about the subject the author wants to relay to the audience.
Subject and theme are not interchangeable terms. The subject is generally more broad, whereas a theme is a more specific lesson or main idea the author wishes to convey.
