The apostrophe (‘) should be placed after the s in dogs (as in “…the dogs’ bone was gone”) to indicate that the bone belongs to both of the dogs.


Explanation:

As it is written, the bone belongs to a singular dog. The apostrophe showing possession is placed after the entities to which the item or items belong. Be careful with collective plurals, such as children’s. The two commas are needed to separate a piece of explanatory information from the rest of the sentence.
