Medical records can be destroyed only after the statute of limitations are up. They must be totally eradicated (burned, deleted, etc.) ideally by an outside company that specializes in such services. The date of destruction should be recorded.
Check federal and state guidelines for statute of limitations as they may differ by location and age of the patient.
