living will and durable power of attorney (POA)
Explanation:
If a patient is deemed unfit to make medical decisions for himself or herself, a living will states the patient’s wishes. If there is no living will, a legal power of attorney is appointed to make medical decisions for the patient. The POA could be a family member or friend.
