Spring brakes are the type of brakes on a trailer that come on automatically in the case of a loss of air pressure in the trailer emergency line.

Older trailers that do not have spring brakes have no emergency brakes if air pressure is lost. Therefore, it is very important to use wheel chocks when parking a trailer without spring brakes.
