Overusing the brakes causes heat to build up. Heat build-up causes brake drums to expand. Expanding brake drums move away from the brake pads. This reduces effectiveness.
Explanation:
Overusing the brakes usually occurs on long down-hill runs. Excessive heat build-up can also cause permanent, long-term damage to the brake shoes, pads, or linings.
