This trick is very helpful in making quick educated guesses and ruling out answer choices.

When adding or subtracting, the answer will have the same number of decimal places as the number with the largest amount of digits after the decimal point.
In this case, 0.403 has 3 digits after the decimal point.

The only time(s) this won’t happen is if they both have the same number of digits after the decimal point and the last digits either add to 10 or subtract to 0.
Example: 0.34 + 0.56[.]
4 + 6 is 10 and that’ll leave a 0 in the hundredths place. The answer is 0.9

Note that if you go ahead and do the operation, you’ll need to align the decimal points vertically before adding or subtracting and bring the point straight down in the answer.
