The examiner would have said “fifty”, since there are fifty (50) states in the US. Spelling number words can be confusing, especially when they start with the same letter. Review the spelling of sixty (60) and seventy (70) as well. Also, the e in the word states is silent, but without it the a makes a different sound. The word stats generally means “numbers.”
