The Louisiana Purchase is often called the “deal of the century.” In 1803, the United States bought 828,000 square miles of land from France (under Napoleon Bonaparte) for approximately $15 million.
To put that in perspective, the U.S. paid about 3 cents per acre to essentially double the size of the country overnight.
