Nutrients are cycled in an ecosystem and are never used up. Energy is used only once, then is released as waste heat that cannot be reused.

Nutrients may be carried out of an ecosystem by a process such as stream flow. They may become unavailable to organisms in that ecosystem, but the nutrients are not destroyed and become available in whatever ecosystem they are carried into.
