\(y\lt 5\) or \((-\infty, 5)\)
The range for the function is the y-values. Since we have a parabola that opens downward (a is negative), the vertex will be the maximum. \(x=-\dfrac{b}{2a}= -\dfrac{2}{2(-1)}=1\) and \(y= -(1)^2+2(1)+4=5\)
