(1) The Summer Olympic Games, also known as the Summer Olympics, is an international multi-sport event that brings nations of the world together in friendly competition. (2) Inspired by ancient Olympic Games held in Olympia, Greece, the first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. (3) In that inaugural Summer Olympics, 245 competitors from 14 countries competed in 42 sporting events, including cycling, fencing, swimming, tennis, and wrestling. (4) The Summer Olympics are held every four years and are hosted by a different city each time. (5) The Winter Olympic Games began in 1924.

(6) Although female athletes were not allowed to compete in the 1896 Olympics, one woman did run the marathon course on her own. (7) Women were allowed to compete in the 1900 Games in Paris.
