What you need to know about the NLN PAX
The National League for Nursing (NLN) Nursing Entrance Exam (NEX) is used by some nursing schools to assess the academic abilities of student applicants. It is not the only evaluation tool, but it is used in conjunction with other criteria.
The NLN NEX consists of three sections that evaluate your reading comprehension, math, and science skills. In each section, there are between five and eight unscored items, but you will not know which these are. You will have 60 minutes to complete each section, and you will take all three sections during one exam administration. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. Here is a breakdown of the exam sections, including a general description, the number of questions in the section, and the percentage of the entire exam for each section.
-
Verbal—This section contains 50 questions, with 25 on word knowledge and 25 assessing reading comprehension. It makes up about 34% of the entire exam.
-
Math—The math section covers the broad areas of numbers and operations, measurement (with conversions), algebra, and data and information. There are 40 questions, and the math section accounts for about 28% of the exam.
-
Science—The questions in this exam section come from the areas of biology, human anatomy, human physiology, chemistry, and health. These 55 questions make up about 38% of the entire exam.
The NLN NEX is the new name for the exam that was previously called the NLN PAX. Besides the rebranding, there have been several other changes that are mostly structural. Each section is now 60 minutes long instead of 40. In the NLN NEX, there are the same number of questions in the Science section as were in the NLN PAX, five more questions in the Math section, and two fewer questions in the Verbal section.
The renaming of this exam also brings minor changes to the content tested, including these:
-
Verbal—The word knowledge part of the Verbal section now assesses more than vocabulary and includes using context clues and employing root words, prefixes, and suffixes to decode a word. There is one less passage in the reading comprehension part of this section and five fewer comprehension questions.
-
Science—There are no longer any physics questions in this exam section. This section also contains fewer chemistry questions than the NLN PAX and nearly double the number of anatomy and physiology questions.
-
Math—Geometry and mathematical concepts questions have been removed from the Math section, and the number of questions on numbers and operations has been reduced by over half. Instead, there has been an increase in the number of questions concerning measurement (conversions) and algebra. Additionally, a new source of questions has been added: data and information. A basic, four-function calculator is allowed.

What are the costs?
The cost to take the NLN NEX is listed as $52.50 by the exam producers. If a separate testing facility is used, the price may be as much as $87.50. Alternatively, the cost may be reduced if your institution provides the exam free or has a supplemental fee support program.
What should I bring?
Since the exam locations vary, the requirements and restrictions for items brought to each exam site may be different. It’s best to check with your exam provider to learn which items you will need and those that are not allowed. Generally, you will need to bring a government-issued photo ID and/or a school ID, any approved testing instruments (including a basic, four-function calculator), and your NLN login and password.
How is it scored?
You will receive a composite score between 0 and 300. This is derived from your percentile score from each section, weighted equally. Your exam report will contain further explanation about the meaning of your scores.
We have not listed a passing score because that is determined by each individual nursing institution to which you apply.
What kind of job can I get?
For people who have innate or nurtured abilities in math and science and who thrive when helping others, the field of nursing can be quite rewarding. There is a wide variety of sub-fields in nursing, and there are numerous advanced certifications available. A nurse has a high degree of responsibility when caring for others and promoting their health.
Am I eligible?
You will probably access the NLN NEX as a part of the entrance requirements to a nursing school, so a high school diploma (or equivalent) is required. There are no minimum age requirements. Retakes before 30 days have passed are not recommended, but each institution monitors its own retake policy. Your score will be valid for three years.
Why does it matter?
Even though it’s not the only measure used by nursing schools to evaluate prospective students, your NLN NEX score is important. A good score can improve your chances of admission.
What salary can I expect?
It may seem like a long way in the future, but there will come a time when your yearly salary is a major concern. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual salary for a registered nurse is around $90,000. Salaries for specialty nurses will be higher, and they will vary for nurses in support capacities.
When is it available?
You will usually take the NLN NEX through the institution to which you are applying for nursing school. Some institutions may use outside testing centers and/or provide remote online testing opportunities. The exam is available for onsite testing and testing with a remote proctor.
How much time is allowed?
The total time allowed for the NLN NEX is three hours, and the sections are timed as follows:
- Verbal—60 minutes
- Math—60 minutes
- Science—60 minutes
