Bias gets a bad rap, but it really cannot be helped. Everyone has bias, which just means a preference of one thing over another. When bias becomes a bad thing, however, is when it is pervasive in the writing to the point that it negatively affects the relationship with the reader. If the preference is mean or discriminatory, it can offend the reader and alienate the audience from the text. While critical readers should be aware of any bias an author includes in his or her writing (and not accept biased-laced statements as facts), it is not necessarily a bad thing for the author to express a preference, or bias, to the audience.
