Critical reading requires a reader to make inferences and draw conclusions based on what is stated in the text and what is implied but not directly stated. Authors use indirect language to hint at or suggest certain ideas and critical readers must pick up on those hints. When asked about a text, critical readers should use not just what is stated in the text, but also what has been inferred by the author and concluded by the reader.
