Authors write with a particular audience in mind. The audience may be very broad and inclusive, or a text may be intended for a more narrow or specific audience. But authors must know who their intended audience is so that they can structure and organize their writing in a way that will appeal to that audience, discuss a topic or idea relevant to that audience, and use diction appropriate to that audience.
