Flashcard 15 - Critical Reading Flashcard Set for the English Basics
Back
main idea, supporting details
Explanation:
The main idea is the general subject of a text. Main ideas can be overarching for the entire text. They can also be found in each paragraph (but the main ideas in each paragraph should tie back to an overall main idea found in the thesis statement of the text). Supporting details support, explain, or provide more information about the main idea. Without the supporting details, the main idea has no “oomph” and loses its impact, just like an umbrella loses its shape without the spokes keeping it spread open.
