Reading to understand applies basic comprehension skills (Can you grasp what the author is trying to say?). Reading to evaluate requires a higher level of thinking. It means not only grasping the author’s message, but weighing that message against your own understanding and beliefs to determine whether to give the argument credibility and consideration or not. Reading to evaluate means assessing the argument and evidence to see if you agree or disagree.
