Graphics like charts or graphs can help a reader visualize abstract ideas and concepts usually associated with numbers and statistics. It is easier to “see” and understand a claim made about a rise in unemployment levels when they are plotted on a graph than when a bunch of numbers are listed in the text. The author may choose to list them as well, but the graphic will help make sense of them for the reader.
