Authors write for a variety of purposes. They may be trying to persuade, inform, or entertain the reader. Understanding the author’s purpose helps a reader evaluate the text more appropriately. It would be unfair and rather ridiculous to criticize an author for not making strong arguments if his or her purpose was simply to inform the audience of something the author felt was important to share.
