Familiar names (mom, dad, grandma, uncle, etc.) should only be capitalized if they are being used as a name. In this case, mom is not being used as a name, but rather an explanation of this person’s relationship to Lance; it’s his mom. Therefore, it’s a common noun and should not be capitalized.
