You can use improvisation for any of these purposes:
- warm up
- get students’ creativity flowing
- explore characterization in an existing play/script
- work through motivation and characterization
There are many forms of improvisation. Teachers should be familiar with various improvisational techniques. Fortunately, there are many fine books published to help teachers, and most have many examples of improvisational exercises and premises.
Note: Improvisation can be daunting for young/inexperienced actors. Younger/beginner actors should improvise as part of group activities (and not be singled out). Except for the most advanced of students, improvisation is rarely used during a performance.
