Sodium bicarbonate can be used to reverse metabolic acidosis caused by bicarbonate loss. However, it is not the only treatment used today. Modern treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause. In select cases such as severe metabolic acidosis, or significant bicarbonate loss, sodium bicarbonate may be considered.
