Care Package Ideas for Deployed Troops
Being deployed is one of the hardest aspects of military life. For soldiers serving in a high-stress environment, receiving a care package from loved ones can often help the time go by a little easier, especially when it is filled with items they can’t access from their location.
Great items to include in your care package are ones that help make their free time a little more fun. Items that can provide entertainment, such as portable DVD players or iPods, make enjoying some music, TV, or a movie an option. Video games are also a good idea because they can often reduce stress by taking their minds off of the hardships of deployment.
Snacks are a great addition to any care package. This is especially true for any foods that might be hard to access locally for them, or any foods that they especially like. Since there are often few options for beverages, powdered drink mixes are also very valued. Similarly, some personal care items can often be very hard to find overseas and would be greatly appreciated. Travel size products such as shampoo, conditioner, pain reliever, and shaving cream can help make life away from home a little more bearable. For care packages sent to very cold regions, disposable hand warmers are a very popular item.
While these are great ideas, often the best items in a care package are reminders of home. Sending photos, artwork or projects done by the deployed person’s children, and scrapbooks can help ease feelings that they are missing out on things completely. It’s also great to include a handwritten letter with some blank paper and pens so that they might write back. A phone card will also allow them to call home, and hearing a familiar voice is always a great feeling when one is homesick. Sending a care package will make someone’s day—just remember to check the regional regulations on prohibited items before packing up!
