PEMDAS

PEMDAS stands for the order of performing the operations: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction (“Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally”) Using the PEMDAS rules:

Parentheses:

\[2 \cdot (1 + 9 \div 3) - 3 \cdot (9^{\frac{1}{2}}) - 5 \div 2 + 8\] \[2 \cdot (1+3) - 3 \cdot 3 - 2.5 + 8\] \[2 \cdot 4 - 3 \cdot 3 - 2.5 + 8\]

Multiply/Divide (from left to right):

\[2 \cdot 4 - 3 \cdot 3 - 2.5 + 8\] \[8 - 9 - 2.5 + 8\]

Add/Subtract (from left to right):

\[8 - 9 - 2.5 + 8\] \[-1 - 2.5 + 8\] \[-3.5 + 8 = 4.5\]
