A fraction is improper if the numerator is greater than the denominator.

The value of an improper fraction is greater than 1. Such fractions should generally be simplified to mixed numbers for a final answer. However, on some tests, the correct answer is an improper fraction, so be careful not to choose an answer simply because it is in proper fraction form. Also make sure it has the correct value.

There are also test items that must be filled in a grid on some tests and the grid only accommodates an improper fraction. In this case, you would have to give the answer in this form.
