A semicolon (;) is used to separate two independent clauses that are related in topic. It performs the same function as a conjunction + a comma.

An example of a semicolon used correctly: “Walter never arrived at the party; his car broke down halfway there.”
An example of a semicolon used incorrectly: “Walter never arrived at the party; because of car trouble.”
