A prescribing provider’s orders are required in the initiation and continuance of restraints. Restraints can only be implemented without a provider’s orders in the event of immediate harm or danger to the patient or staff. The orders must be obtained within an extremely short amount of time, often 10–15 minutes after applying the restraints. The orders must be updated with patient assessments performed by the nurse and removed as soon as possible when the patient and staff are deemed safe.
