Flashcard 13 - Survey of the Natural Sciences Flashcard Set for the DAT

Back

Subtract the atomic number from the mass number.

Explanation:

Neutrons are neutral in charge, but have a mass of approximately 1 amu. The atomic number indicates how many protons are in the atom, and protons have a mass of approximately 1 amu as well. By subtracting the atomic number (number of protons) from the mass of the molecule, the number of neutrons can be calculated.
