The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model is a standardized model that is used to map how communications take place in a network environment. Data being transported through a network begins at the physical layer (Layer 1) and works its way up to the application layer (Layer 7), and then proceeds to descend from the application layer back to the physical layer.
