Flashcard 18 - Cardiovascular Emergencies Flashcard Set for the CEN

Back

hypotension, tachycardia, tachypnea, shortness of breath, decreased urine output, diminished peripheral pulses, jugular vein distension, and altered mental status

Explanation:

Tachycardia occurs as the body attempts to compensate for hypotension, while tachypnea and shortness of breath result from the lack of oxygen available to tissues throughout the body. Jugular vein distention is caused by the inability of blood to return to the heart. As the shock progresses and the ability to perfuse the body decreases, you will notice diminished peripheral pulses and decreased urine output. A severe case can lead to an altered mental status.
