What’s New for the TOEFL® Test?

The TOEFL® test is designed to measure English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing at a college or university level. There are two versions of the TOEFL® test, the internet-based test (iBT) and the paper-based test. As a standard test that is widely recognized, it’s important to note that the exam underwent many changes in late 2019 that may impact individuals who are preparing for it in the near future.

This is a list of the changes:

• Extended Registration Times: In the past, examinees taking the iBT had to register 12 days prior to the exam and those taking the paper-based version had to register four days prior to the test date. These deadlines have changed to three and two days, respectively, allowing test-takers more time to register.

• Reduced Retest Wait Time: Along with the extended registration time, those test-takers that want to retake the test will enjoy a reduced wait time of only three days, compared to the previous 12.

• Easier Registration: Registration for the test has been streamlined, allowing users a faster and easier experience with consolidated resources.

• Free Practice Tests: The iBT Free Practice Test feature allows users to familiarize themselves with all of the test sections and question types. Users have unlimited access.

• Shorter Test: The duration of the exam was reduced from three and a half hours to only three hours, without making material changes to the substance of the test.

• Afternoon Testing Options: Select test dates now have afternoon sessions, allowing you to schedule the test with maximum convenience.

• Reading & Listening Instant Scores: Upon completion of the test, you can view unofficial scores for the Reading and Listening sections. This feature provides you with an idea of how well you did and may help you decide whether you would like to report or cancel your scores.

• Faster Score Reporting: In the past, exam scores wouldn’t be available until 10 days after you had completed the test. This has been reduced so that you can view your score online only six days after you’ve taken the test.

• MyBest Scores: MyBest Scores is a new feature that will let you see your best scores for each section of your exam taken within the last two years.

• TOEFL® Official App: The new app allows examinees to access and manage all of their exam-related activities conveniently from a mobile device.
