What you need to know about the TEAS

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a standardized test designed to assess students’ general understanding and knowledge across four core academic fields: Mathematics, Science, English and Language Usage, and Reading. It is commonly used as an admissions requirement for nursing and allied health programs in the United States.

As of June 3, 2022, the TEAS 6 version of the test was phased out and replaced with the updated ATI TEAS Version 7. The TEAS 7 version continues to evaluate students’ proficiency in the same subject areas but may have slight differences in question types, content, or format compared to its predecessor.

The TEAS test is available in two formats: electronic and paper-pencil versions. The choice of format depends on the test location and the policies of the testing center. Regardless of the chosen format, both versions contain the same content, meaning they cover the same topics and assess students’ knowledge and skills in the same areas.

What are the costs?

There is a fee to take the TEAS 7, though the cost varies depending on where you are taking the test. Typically it is around $120. Sending the results to one school is included in the test fee, but if you want your results sent to more than one school it will cost $29.99 per school. It is best to contact the school to which you are applying to nursing school for more information.

What should I bring?

If you are taking the pencil-and-paper version of the test, you will need to bring several sharpened number 2 pencils and erasers. You will also need to bring some form of legal identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. School IDs do not count. You may not bring any outside materials, such as calculators, to the testing site. Food, drinks, and cell phones are also not allowed.

How is it scored?

The ATI TEAS exam is scored based on the number of correct answers provided by the test taker. There is no penalty for incorrect answers, so it is advantageous to attempt all questions. The raw score, which is the total number of correct answers, is then converted into a scaled score ranging from 0 to 100. This scaled score represents the test taker’s performance relative to a national or program-specific sample of test-takers.

For online test-takers, the score is available immediately after completing the exam. If you take the paper-and-pencil version, your score will be accessible within 48 hours after ATI receives your test from the testing site. The score report can be accessed through your ATI account.

It is essential to note that some TEAS questions require more than one answer, and if any part of the answer is incorrect, you will not receive partial credit. In these cases, the entire response will be counted as wrong. To maximize your score, it’s crucial to carefully read and understand the question requirements and provide accurate responses.

What kind of job can I get?

Nursing is a growing and dynamic field that provides boundless opportunities for growth, learning, and advancement. Nurses can practice in a variety of settings, including doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals, schools, and nursing homes.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible to take the test you must first visit the official ATI testing website. From here you will create an account that you will use if you take the electronic version of the test. You can also find information about testing sites and fees associated with the exam.

Why does it matter?

The TEAS is important because it is your ticket for admission into certain nursing schools. Some schools use the TEAS exclusively for admission, while other schools may offer several different nursing entrance exams from which to choose. If your school does use the TEAS as an exclusionary factor for nursing school, it is important to study and practice for the exam in advance so you don’t delay admission into the program.

What salary can I expect?

Registered nurses make a median salary of about $81,000 annually, though this number can vary greatly depending on geographic location, level of education, and type of nursing that is practiced.

When is it available?

The TEAS is given all year round. The times it is offered depend on when you apply for admission to nursing school and when the college or university offers the test.

How much time is allowed?

On the ATI TEAS 7, you will have 209 minutes to answer a total of 170 questions.

  • In the Reading section of the test you will have 55 minutes to answer 45 questions.

  • In the Mathematics section of the test you will have 57 minutes to answer 38 questions.

  • In the Science section of the test you will have 60 minutes to answer 50 questions.

  • In the English & Language Usage section of the test you will have 37 minutes to answer 37 questions.

Although you will answer 170 questions, 20 of these are considered “experimental” and will not be counted toward your final score. You will not be made aware of which questions don’t count.
