Question 13 - Reading: Level M Practice Test for the TABE Test

The word prediction, as it is used in the passage provided and in the sentence reproduced here, most nearly means ____.

This holiday is really a weather prediction.

February is the shortest month of the year. However, we celebrate some important days during this month. Here are four of them.

Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2 each year. This holiday is really a weather prediction. Tradition says that if a groundhog comes out of its burrow and sees its shadow on February 2, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If the groundhog does not see its shadow, then spring will arrive early.

We also celebrate President Lincoln’s birthday in February. He was born on February 12, 1809. Lincoln grew up poor but became a lawyer and was elected as the country’s 16th president. His image is on the U.S. penny.

Valentine’s Day is another February holiday. It is February 14. This holiday celebrates love. Many people send cards to others on this day to show their love and appreciation. Others send flowers or chocolate. The most recognizable symbol of Valentine’s Day is the heart.

In February, we also celebrate the birthday of the first president of the United States. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732. He served as a military general during the Revolutionary War. He was elected the country’s first president in 1789. Washington helped to shape the country into what it is today.

From forecasting the end of winter to celebrating love to honoring two former presidents, Americans have a lot on their plates this month!
