South Korea is a country in East Asia that occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. It shares a border with North Korea, with whom it has had a tenuous relationship for many years. K-pop, short for Korean Pop, is a famous style of music in South Korea that generally consists of audiovisual effects, dancing, and upbeat music. Japan lies to the east, across the East Sea. Tensions with Japan, after their occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945, have largely abated, save for some lingering hostility in the older generations.
