Despite being offered golf and other recreation, the people held in the Manzanar camp were ungrateful and surly toward the guards who kept them there.

The American government considered Japanese-Americans as a threat to national security, so they had to be detained somewhere and the camp at Manzanar was the only option.

Although the government tried to provide a sense of normalcy to life in the Manzanar camp, it was still an internment camp and the lack of freedom still meant a certain degree of torture for those held captive there.

As a result of the internment of thousands of Japanese-Americans during World War II, historians consider that a very dark period of American history because their civil liberties and freedoms were stripped away.
